When I was exploring water colors, I made several paintings. There are few works though that I admire the most. I don’t know the reason for admiration. May be it’s because I like the subject, may be because I like the final outcome. Painting these two works gave me some insights. Read on to know more.
Let’s have a look at the two paintings:
While painting the flower vase, it was a delight to play with different shades of pink to create the feel of flowers. It is perhaps right to say that when painting plants, trees or flowers: less is more. One should try to capture the feel of the plant, rather than trying to capture each and every detail. For example, in the case of making the flowers, rather than trying to make each petal perfectly, I kept my focus on the shades that I could see and the overall form of the flowers.
Another work is that of some age old utensils. I love all kinds of vintage stuff and painting them is just pure fun. While coloring these two utensils on paper, my real challenge was to exactly replicate the shades they had.
Lessons that I learned from the two paintings:
- When it comes to painting botanical subjects, less is more. Rather than going for very fine details, one should look for overall forms and tonal values.
- Perspective can be very tricky while drawing a bunch of leaves or any other natural plant. Special attention should be paid to them.
- If trying to capture something really old, it helps if the shades are made accurately.
- If you love the subjects of painting, the final outcome of your painting will be much better.
P.S. It’s always good to use papers specially designed for water colors while making a water color work. Such papers absorb more water so that you can make a water color painting with several layers. The final outcome is so much better. Such papers are easily available online:
