My painting “Blossoming” is an example of painting abstract flowers. However, the story behind the idea of this painting takes me back to my hometown – Aligarh in India. As artists, we look for inspiration all around consciously or sub-consciously. Once, I attended a flower show with my mother in Aligarh. It was a superb flower show and I was amazed at the beauty of those flowers.
I kept on taking their snapshots as I wanted to retain that beauty even when I return home. At the back of my mind, I also had a thought that how lovely it would be if I could make a painting inspired from these flowers.
This flower show had so much variety of flowers that it was a treat to the eyes and the soul. Having painted an imaginary flower painting “Jubilance” in my own geometric and block style, I had confidence that I could pull off another flower painting using one of the snapshots of the flower show.
It was to shortlist one kind of flower from the multiple snapshots for a painting. I finally decided to use these really long and erect pinkish flowers for my painting as I had never seen those kind ever before. Somehow, there delicate yet sturdy nature inspired me. Generally, we associate delicateness with flowers. However, these flowers were not just delicate, they were strong enough to stand tall and maintain it strongly.
Painting abstract flowers in geometric style:
Painting abstract flowers has its own challenges. Once again, my motive was to give this flower painting a geometric/block touch that I give in most of my paintings. I also wanted background to have very prominent blocks and a lot of variation from light to dark.
Pink and blue was the choice of color palette for this painting. I had admired this combination when I had seen painting of these hues made by other painters. Now, it was my time to use this color combination. I also included green here and there mainly to incorporate leaves.
It was a challenge to balance the use of blue and pink. Also, going all the way from white to the darkest blue in the background blocks was a tough task too. When the painting got finished, I felt that I did justice to the shades and most importantly my source of inspiration.
Time to blossom:
I aptly titled the painting as “Blossoming”. After giving final touches to the painting, it looked like this:
This painting is the best of both worlds; geometric art and delicate yet strong flowers. It was admired by people who viewed it.
