While making “The Butterfly Garden” painting; an important aspect of making painting was learnt again by me. This painting made me implement a crucial requirement in any art work. It was about harmony in a painting or keeping the elements of the painting connected.
Painting a butterfly was a great experience for me. Although each element has a unique role to play but the elements should feel connected as a whole too.
Looking for an answer to find harmony in a painting:
After completing all the steps of the painting that were initially planned; I felt that something was missing. There were few days when I felt perplexed. There was no answer to what was required to get that connection or harmony in a painting.
Harmony is a very important principle of art and it was somewhat missing from the painting. It was a kind of creativity block where I was unable to think beyond the initial planning. However, the techniques of distracting your mind, going for a walk and engaging in daily routine of life worked for me. These simple yet effective techniques helped me unblock the query related to this painting.
The eureka moment..Finding an answer to achieve harmony in a painting
When I looked at the painting with fresh eyes, after some consideration; I got my answer. It was realised by me that the abstract flowers in the painting seemed as if flying in the air and not much connected with rest of the elements. A technique as simple as adding a twig to these abstract flowers made all the difference.
Another small yet significant change was to include more elements of the background with the foreground. It was clear that the ratio of areas with minimal painting was quite high. There needed to be larger areas of the canvas involved and lesser areas with plain paint coating (to help in creating focal point).
For above issue, addition of twigs, some dry brushing and addition of a bud in a large painted area helped.
A sense of unity in “The Butterfly Garden”:
All these minute but significant changes in the painting helped in bringing harmony or a sense of togetherness in “The Butterfly Garden”. So that’s it, just these few changes and the painting got all the missing bits and bolts together and ready for the world!
