If you are wondering how to paint sun rays in oil colours, this blog is for you. In my painting, “The Butterfly Garden” I wanted to paint sun rays to enhance the beauty of the painting. While it might seem difficult to paint sun rays using oil paints, it’s actually simple.

Why I painted the sun rays in the painting?

Although I made the garden in my painting in my block style, addition of sun rays was a deliberate effort. Sun -rays were added to bring the painting a bit close to reality and more interesting. It was not a preplanned decision but something that came to me later in the process of painting. I just felt that addition of sun rays would make the painting more complete.

In order to make sun rays using oil paints, white colour was diluted with liquin. Idea was to reduce the thickness of white colour to a certain extent. Next, a very small portion of this white colour was taken in a small brush.

Now, the brush was held in such a way by me that only the tip of the brush touched the canvas. The brush was swiftly moved in a line to represent sun rays. I personally felt that the sun rays worked out best when the white colour in the brush was minimal and almost close to none.

Also, it’s best when you make one sunray in one single brush stroke and don’t overdo it. Keep your hand as steady as possible.
