The debate between realism and abstract art is endless. It’s hard to say which is better than another. Realism art replicates the creations of the ultimate creator, the almighty God. On the other hand, abstract art are the creations of his creations. Perhaps the whole idea of comparing the two forms of art is unjustified. In a world where there is variety in every form of art, so should be the case with paintings too. Painting abstract or realistic should be a personal choice of the artist then anyone else. As the proverb goes, “beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”, each art ultimately finds its audience.

After practicing a lot of still life and other realistic objects, I was keen to try making something abstract. It’s hard to express yourself through colors and random formation but an exercise could really help. In this exercise I first researched on the significance of various colours. Certain colors have positive attributes and some have negative. Even the same color can signify negative and positive emotions depending on its tones.

After getting an understanding on the meaning of colors, I made random paintings on different emotions like love, hatred, jealousy, joy. While making these paintings, there was no preliminary sketch. I started the painting directly with watercolours.

Some of the emotions were understood by people while some were not that clear. In any case, this exercise helped me to understand the world of this form of art in a better way.

Lessons that I learned in my first attempt at abstract art:
  1. A thorough understanding of the meaning of each color helps in making such art.
  2. It’s extremely important to feel what you want to show through your abstract art.
  3. In abstract art, it’s sometimes essential to let go off a lot of preplanning and trust your instincts to build random forms. On the contrary, sometimes planning can help too.
  4. The experience of studying realistic objects and the effect of light and shades on them helps in the creation of abstract art.
