Drawing a face is something I really enjoy. Some of my oil paintings have faces that I have drawn in my block style. Contrary to the perception that I draw the face in blocks directly, I actually had to practice drawing normal faces before giving them my twist.

Drawing a face can be daunting for some people as it seems like a lot. However, some basic rules of proportions can make it so much easier. These rules of proportion not just make your portrait look more real, they are a great time savior as well.

Let me jot down the basic rules of proportion of faces that you ought to remember before diving into drawing a face:
  1. When you draw the head of a face (with head, I mean inclusive of hairs) – the eyes are located at half of this head. This might seem surprising but try it to see it for yourself.
  2. In your eye line, you can approximately draw up to five eyes. In fact, the distance between the two eyes is also that of width of one eye.
  3. The corners of the inner side of the eyes generally line up with the edges of the nostrils.
  4. The line between the lips or the ‘mouth’ line is at approximately one third below the nose line and the end of the chin.
  5. The inside part of pupils of the eyes usually line up with the corners of the mouth.
  6. The ears are generally found between the eye line and the nose line. However, they can extend all the way to the brow line.

Remember these proportions every time you attempt to drawing a face. Your portraits will come out so much better. If you forget these proportions, come back to this blog and re-read these.

Once you become thoroughly familiar with these proportions, it all comes down to practice. The more you practice, better will be the faces you draw!
