Different artists have different techniques of painting in oils. However, painting in layers has been a time tested technique for most of the artists. The magic of layering in oil painting cannot be stressed enough.

The old masters used to put great amount of layers in their oil painting. I can speak from my personal experience that the more layers you put in your oil painting, the richer it looks.

Here is my list of top reasons why you should consider layering in oil painting:

1. More the layers in an oil painting, the painting seems to have more depth.
2. More layers of paints makes the oil painting look richer.
3. When layering is done, blending the colors just keeps getting easier in subsequent layers.
4. There are a number of oil techniques that work so much better when sufficient layering in oil painting has been done.
5. Layering is your best bet when a painting seems unfinished, not that neat or needs a minor or drastic change.
6. The last brush strokes of finishing that turn a painting from ‘good’ to ‘wow’ work much better if there are lots of oil paint layers underneath.
