Your painting is important and so are the sides of the canvas. How did you paint sides of the canvas tells a lot about you. The sides of your canvas can tell whether you are an amateur or a pro in what you do.
Let’s discover different ways to paint the sides of the canvas:
Basically there are two main ways of painting the sides of the canvas. If you have used either of the ways, your painting will be presented professionally.
Two ways of painting the sides of the canvas:
First way is to paint the four sides of the canvas in a single colour. A dark colour like black, vandyke brown, prussian blue is preferred.
Tip: Make sure that you don’t just paint the sides in a rush. The sides should be painted well ( preferably with enough layers). Give proper finishing to the sides. Make sure the colour application and the direction of brush strokes are uniform.
Second way of painting the sides of the canvas is to paint the sides as if they are a part of the painting. The painting continues to the sides as well.
Tip: Best way to achieve the sides like this is to continue painting the on the sides while painting the main front surface of the canvas. Whenever you reach the end of the canvas, continue painting the same effect on the side. It should feel as if the painting hasn’t come to a halt suddenly. However, remember that one side of the painting will touch the easel. You can’t continue painting on it like the other three sides. For this, paint the fourth side whenever rest of the painting is finished/dried. Do justice to this side by trying to give approximate same number of layers of oils and same finishing as on the surface just above it.

Which way to choose while painting canvas sides:
It’s mainly a personal choice whether you want to paint all the sides in one single plain color or continue painting on the sides as rest of the painting.
Sometimes I prefer one over the other and choose accordingly as per my painting.
Whatever way you choose, make sure you don’t leave any corner unattended.
