I had absolutely no idea that when I’ll transform a painting made in pen and ink to a painting in oil, where will I land up. Still, I was quite excited as usual and ready to take on all the surprises along the way of my art journey.
A color combination by using water colors was my next target. I knew that the final oil painting will still have lots of changes but having at least some vague idea was good enough. Due to my love for the color orange, I decided to go with it. Orange is filled with so much brightness and positive vibes. I wanted to use shades similar to orange and browns initially. I came up with this color combination initially. Hardly did I know that it was just the start of my art journey.
Starting with the oil painting art journey
Although this color combination was satisfactory enough, I wasn’t very sure of it. The brightness and vibrancy that I wanted was still lacking. I tried gaining better tones of orange in the oil version of the painting. Some changes were also made in the initial drawing and light and dark zones.
As can be seen from the closer snap shot above, I used masking tape and various tones of orange in it. The picture is taken before I blended the tones. They range from yellowish orange to reddish orange as they reach the edges of the canvas.
Discovery in my art journey
Another very interesting thing about the main body of the painting was the emergence of a lady like figure if I highlighted certain portions on the right half of it. So, if observed closely, one can see a lady like figure in the right half of the main form. This was a new discovery made along my art journey.
With all the amazing discoveries, enjoying and learning at each step. I finally ended up with the following painting:
To sum up, flexibility is the key. We must be ready to extend ourselves and think of ideas that never occurred initially. An artist should be flexible in:
- The initial sketch
- The color combinations
- The light and dark portions
- The overall feel of the painting
As much as I learned from the art journey of this painting, I was very excited and ready to take on the art journey of my next painting…….

This blog is definitely rather handy since I’m at the moment creating an internet floral website – although I am only starting out therefore it’s really fairly small, nothing like this site. Can link to a few of the posts here as they are quite. Thanks much. Zoey Olsen
