When I started painting initially, I was too overwhelmed by the insecurities and instabilities of the outer world.  Hope and optimism were the two factors that kept me going and helped me focus on possibilities and not the distractions. Hope abstract painting is dedicated to these emotions.

This painting is composed of several lines and curves.  These lines and curves are situated inside rectangles and triangles. The formation of curvaceous designs among the lines symbolizes hope for me. I have used green and yellow deliberately for this painting. Yellow is the colour of brightness and hope. It signifies the luminance that fills darkness. Green, on the other hand is a very soothing colour.

Before starting to make hope abstract painting in oils, I just made a rough layout using water colours:

I kept lots of curves in the background to signify that hope and possibilities are always present and it is us who fail to see them.

As the above painting was just a reference layout, I made some changes in the final oil painting. I made the yellow brighter. The shades of green were more intensified. However, the surprise that came along while making this painting was the appearance of a face. While making all the designs in the background, the side profile of a face was possible. All that was needed was the placement of an eye.

After making the required changes, hope abstract painting looked like this:

So, with the placement of eye ball, sharpening of nose, highlighting several areas, the face was clearly visible in the background. The yellow background was done in such a manner so that the face is highlighted in the right way.

Another effect that was introduced in this painting was the extension of the major forms beyond the central location:

These kinds of extensions were not present in my initial layout of hope abstract painting. But just the continuation in the background, as if they are tearing apart and coming in the fore front, made the painting more interesting.

So, all in all, this “Hope” abstract painting taught me that:

  1. One should keep looking for ways to make the original initial idea more interesting.
  2. Adapt the initial shades and designs according to whatever new changes you are adding in your painting.
  3. Always try to maintain a relationship between the main form and the background in interesting ways.
