When it comes to creating geometric art, a lot of factors come into play. This blog is about placing the geometric shapes and painting them accordingly. With the help of an example, this blog is going to take you through the steps you can apply in painting your own unique geometric art.
Overlap the geometric shapes
Some compositions might require placing each geometric shape separately. However, overlapping the shapes in your geometric art creates more interest. Additionally, overlapping also results in bringing a unity to the painting. Each shape feels like a part of the overall big picture. In my artwork, “Happy Balance”, you can notice how I have overlapped almost all shapes with one or more other shape. This was intentional and it worked.

Add dark shades to enhance overlap
This should seem obvious but it is important to be stated. When it comes to painting the overlapped portions, the shape behind should have a darker shade at overlap. This will create depth, 3D effect and a finishing touch to your painting. You can notice how I have used dark shades while overlapping any two shapes.
For instance, the purple sphere is ahead of the green rectangle. So, the green rectangle gets the darker shadow at the overlap. You are painting geometric abstracts but you should keep imagining realistic shadows to take your art to the next level.

Put dark next to light and vice versa
This tip is again an extension of previous tip. If you have a very dark colour somewhere, think of ways to add a very light shade next to it.
For instance, in “Happy Balance” artwork, dark green is contrasted by light blue in the overlap. This deliberate play of light and dark will give an interesting colour range to your art.

Think geometry inside geometric shapes
It is not necessary to make a geometric shape and paint it. You can get more creative by adding tiny geometric patterns inside the bigger geometric shapes. This tip can make your composition more vibrant. However, you do not need to apply it to all the shapes. Additionally, you can choose to paint these tiny patterns simply without much shading. This way the pattern will add drama while being easy on the eyes.
For instance, yellow purple lines in the rectangle and pink orange tiny triangular pattern inside the bigger triangle in “Happy Balance” is an example of pattern inside geometric shape.

Conclusion on making abstract geometric art easily
As mentioned earlier, there are lots of ways to make geometric art. We have discussed just one way of approaching it. You can try this or whatever feels good to your heart. Like any other thing in life, geometric art keeps getting better with patience and practice. I hope above tips help you in making your own unique geometric art.
