Sometimes we wonder about the importance of sketching in art . Perhaps one of the best ways to gauge the evolution of an artist is to go through his/her sketchbook. The sketchbook of an artist shows all the rough drawings/finished drawing/quick sketch/ideas and everything in between.

It is said that ideally an artist should carry a sketchbook everywhere he/she goes. You never know where you find something interesting to sketch.  Exceptions could be situations when you are travelling in a fast moving vehicle and your only option is to take a picture and make a sketch later.

Even if you make abstract paintings, the practice of sketching regularly can make a huge difference in the quality of your paintings. Sketching can include both abstract ideas as well as sketches of realistic objects.

 Importance of sketching in art:
  • Understanding light and darks based on source light.
  • Improvement in drawing skills.
  • The more you sketch, better are our observation skills.
  • Sketchbooks serve as a record book of your own ideas.
  • Sketchbooks give you a rough idea and help you visualize how your final painting/art work will look like.
  • You can reflect on your learning journey by comparing your previous sketches with current ones.
  • Practical implementation of the theories of drawing like perspective, elements and principles of drawing is the best way to understand these concepts better.

Keep the sketching practice going
  • A quick sketch of as little as ten minutes will keep you in touch with your creativity.
  • The tonal range while making a drawing will help you make better decisions while coloring a painting later.
  • Availability of a sketchbook by your side all the time gives you opportunity to express yourself whenever you want.
Time to sketch:

Whether you want to make a quick sketch or a detailed drawing; just go for it. Now that you know the importance of sketching in art; try incorporating sketching in your lifestyle and see the difference. It’s best if you sketch daily!

I have been surfing online more than 3 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me. Personally, if all web owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the net will be much more useful than ever before.
