Twelve tips for buying a painting:
  1. One of the best tips for buying a painting is to trust your instincts. Sometimes, when you view a painting, you just know that this is the one for you. No matter how many more paintings you see, your heart always wants to go back to that art piece which is running on your mind. It’s a signal that you ought to own that painting and bring it back home. However, if you are not getting that instinctive feel, don’t worry. Read on to find some other ways to choose a painting.
  2. Another way to choose a painting is to think about what colours or styles you like in n general. For instance, if you are always attracted to the blue colour and like abstract style of paintings; a blue abstract painting is your best option. You can try researching on different styles of painting and find your own taste or the style that appeals to you the most. Additionally, remember that although there are limited categories of painting style, most of the artists have their own sub style or unique way of painting in that category. Hence, stay open to viewing the art work of each artist without any preconceived notions.
  3. Consider your place as an indicator among the tips for buying a painting. Remember, it’s best for you to take into account where you want to display art. Think whether you want to buy a painting for your home, for an office, for gifting purpose, for an auditorium, a club or any such other place. Next, you can think of what people will live/visit that place and what will be appropriate.
  4. Another option in tips for buying a painting is an extension of the previous point. It includes looking at the subcategory of the place. For instance, the painting for the office of an entertainment channel could be different than that of a corporate office. Again, the painting for a kids room might be different than the art piece you would put in your living room. Remember that all these things are subjective to your personal taste as well besides the atmosphere.
  5. You have to decide whether you want the painting to merge with the atmosphere or pop out. Suppose most of the furniture in your living room consists of dark brown wooden furniture. You can choose to buy a painting with a brown colour scheme. In contrast, you can also choose a painting with a bright red, yellow orange etc. This contrast will attract the eyes of the viewers towards the painting. Additionally, a contrast will add the much required spark of colour to break the general dark brown theme of the room.
  6. You can also consider the general theme of decoration. For example, if you have lots of plants in your house, you can buy a painting that complements the plants. For example, you can buy a painting with trees, bushes, flowers in abstract or realistic style or any style of your choice.
  7. If you want to emphasise something in particular with an art piece, choose your painting accordingly. For example, if you want your painting to inspire you for something, choose something made with that intention. If you want the painting to remind people of the local culture, choose a painting that demonstrates that. Try to find out the background, intention and inspiration behind making of a painting. Also, you can find out whether artist wants to convey a particular message or has a purpose to fulfill with a painting.
  8. Some tips for buying a painting are based on your knowledge of the art world itself. If you have more knowledge regarding the medium, that could be another criterion. Maybe you prefer oil paintings over watercolour or acrylic paintings or vice versa. In contrast, maybe you just like pen and ink work.
  9. Previous point brings me to yet another detailed way of buying. Again, this method of buying will work for you only if you are aware of some terms and techniques related to painting.
